The facade of the great basilica church of San Petronio in Bologna, left unfinished when construction of the rest of the church was completed towards the end of the fifteenth century, still remains unfinished today. The present handsomely produced volume, excellent for its date, explains the various projects for the facade’s completion, and reproduces surviving design drawings for it by such eminent architects as Baldassare Peruzzi, Giulio Romano, Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola and Andrea Palladio. It also illustrates subsequent projects by the seventeenth century architect Girolamo Rainaldi, by the eighteenth century architect Mauro Tesi and by a number of nineteenth century architects, the most recent being designs submitted for a competition held in 1887.
