Full Description

*vo. xliv (including preliminary blank leaf) + (4) + 316 + (4)pp, engraved frontispiece, 8 folding outline engraved plates. Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt spine. A little intermittent browning, but a generally fresh, unrestored copy.
Second edition of this controversial contribution to the theory of architecture, in which its author, the Jesuit priest Marc-Antoine Laugier (1713-1769), advocated “radical primitivism, epitomised by the hut consisting only of columns, entablature and roof” (as the authors of the BAL Catalogue put it). The first edition had appeared in 1753, without Laugier having been identified as its author, and for this second edition Laugier, whose name now appeared on its title leaf, provided a new preface and an expanded text, responding to published criticisms of the arguments he had set out in 1753. BAL Cat 1774; Berlin Cat 2405; Cicognara 545.
