Chancellor, Alfred Ernest
Examples of old furniture English and foreign.
London, Batsford 1898.
Folio. (2)+28pp, 40 litho plates. Publisher’s cloth.
Chancellor provides drawings of a representative selection of pieces of furniture of 16th-18th century date, most of which he had sketched when on view at Christie’s or on display in London museums. This kind of sketched record was already being superseded by the increasing use of photography for the same purpose, but Chancellor’s book was doubtless aimed at, and found useful by, the reproduction furniture trade. A relatively uncommon book today.
