Full Description
4to. 64pp, mostly line drawings. Publisher’s cloth, in dustwrapper (the wrapper chipped at head of spine, but otherwise in respectable condition). Ink presentation inscription from Brian Housden to “Rick”, Christmas 1950.
First edition. A little less familiar than other similar titles by Lancaster, this combines poetry, sketches of architectural facades, and cartoons featuring his aristocratic it-girl, Maudie Littlehampton. One Betjemanesque stanza from Lancaster’s poetry will suffice as a quotation : Above the shrine of Artemis/The English church, by G.E.Street,/Proclaims, with Gothic emphasis,/A faith which triumphs over heat.
