The first illustrated edition of Goethe’s Faust in Swedish, utilising a translation into Swedish made by Johan Andersson (1820-1894), a university-educated teacher who was subsequently to be ordained and to become Lutheran Bishop of Växjö. Andersson also provided explanatory notes printed at the end of the volume. The plates, from powerful drawings by the Düsseldorf artist Engelbert Selbertz, were also used for a German-language edition published in Stuttgart in the same year.
