Festa del Senato Consulente per la pace di Vienna e pel ritorno dalla guerra di S.A.I. il Principo Vicerè decreta il giornio 4 Novembre 1809 celebrata il giorno 24 Febbraio 1810.
Milano, Stamperia Reale 1810.
Large folio. xlv + (3)pp. Contemporary marbled boards (binding a little marked and soiled). A good fresh copy internally. Early nineteenth century oval stamp on half title leaf of “C.R. Stamperia di Governo” (was this a copy retained by the Stamperia Reale for its own archive ?).
A rare volume issued as a record of the festivities held at the Palazzo del Senato in Milan, with an elaborate temporary architectural structure (described but not illustrated) on an adjacent bridge, to celebrate the Peace of Vienna (the peace concluded between the Emperor Napoleon and Austria after Austrian defeats at the battles of Aspern and Wagram) and the triumphant return to Milan of Napoleon’s step-son, Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824), then ruling in Lombardy and Venice as Napoleon’s viceroy. We surmise that this was the only fête book issued during Eugène de Beauharnais’s period of rule in Northern Italy on his stepfather’s behalf, and it is an interesting manifestation of the pro-Napoleon enthusiasm which the Senate at Milan thought it appropriate to display at this high watermark of Napoleonic success. The volume’s Italian text is followed by a more or less identical text in French. Not in Vinet.
