A comic novel on the rather unlikely theme of John Farquhar’s purchase of Fonthill Abbey from William Beckford in 1822. The protagonists, Beckford and Farquhar, converse rather more freely about their respective sexual preferences than is remotely plausible, but the author works into his narrative much of the events of Beckford’s past life and there are walk-on parts for Beckford’s daughter Margaret and for the Prince of Wales (George IV). Millington, p.352.
