First edition. This volume by Lübke was issued as the second part of a Geschichte der Neueren Baukunst appearing under the joint names of Lübke and Jacob Burckhardt, but it is a more significant volume than that might suggest, for the first part of the Geschichte was Burckhardt’s Geschichte der Renaissance in Italien, the most celebrated of all books on the architecture of the Italian renaissance, and Lübke’s was intended as a companion work, although he explicitly states that his approach to the French material is different, as indeed it is !
