Knole was one of the surprisingly few English country houses open on a regular basis to visits from the general public at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the present guide book, unpretentious but efficiently compiled, shows that the public had access in 1910 to all of the house’s principal state rooms. It is also of interest in that it shows what works of art were kept where during the years in which the youthful Vita Sackville-West, poet, garden designer and the house’s future historian, was growing up at Knole as the only child of the then Lord Sackville (but not, as she was deeply to regret, as the heir to the house and its contents).
