German-language edition of Baillie Scott’s very influential book, Houses and Gardens, originally published in English in 1906. Baillie Scott’s designs in the Arts and Crafts manner for the interior of the ducal palace at Darmstadt, commissioned from him by the Grand Duke of Hesse in 1897-8, had won him an admiring public in Germany, and his reputation there had been cemented by his subsequent success in the Haus für einen Kunstfreund competition organised by the publisher Alexander Koch. The present edition, issued by the well-known Wasmuth firm in Berlin, closely follows the earlier English-language edition (although neither the paper on which it was printed nor its binding were of the same quality as that used for the edition of 1906), and it testifies to the enthusiasm felt for Baillie Scott in Germany in the years before the outbreak of the First World War.
