London, Anthony Treherne & Co.Ltd 1905.
8vo. vii + (1) + 75 + (1)pp, 5 plates. Publisher's pictorial wrappers, defective at spine. Some internal spotting. Roderick Gradidge's copy (book label).
We list this brief biography of Sir Henry Irving here because, as Gordon Craig very properly pointed out in his Index to the Story of My Days (see that item), “the type, paper, cover-paper, printing, layout, cover design and shape are, for some inexplicable reason, a copy (exact in each detail) of the Foulis, Edinburgh, edition of The Art of the Theatre, published in the summer of 1905. This cannot possibly have been meant as a compliment to Foulis, and is by no means the sort of thing H(enry) I(rving) would have liked. The Chiswick Press was H.I.’s idea of printing”.
