Full Description
Folio. Half title leaf in gold, title leaf in gold, red and blue, (84)pp text printed within colour printed decorative borders, (4)pp list of plates, 25 plates (of which plates 1-20 are chromolitho and plates 22-25 engraved india-paper proofs). Contemporary quarter red morocco, marbled boards. A little light spotting on half title leaf and title leaf and at outer margins of the engraved plates, but nonetheless a good copy, with the text pages and chromolitho plates in clean and pleasing condition.
A handsomely produced volume devoted to the Sainte Chapelle as newly restored by J.-B.-A.Lassus, with illustrations in brilliant colour of ornamental details taken from the church’s wall paintings and stained glass windows. The authors acknowledge Lassus’s assistance and the volume is the most vivid published record of the chapel’s internal colour scheme as envisaged by its 19th century restorer. Their text provides a resumé of the history of the building and a description of it in its restored state.
