One of Viollet-le-Duc’s architectural novelettes, in which each chapter deals with an episode in the history of the fictional Château de la Roche-Pont, from the château’s pre-Roman origins to its siege by the Allied armies in January – March 1814. Viollet-le-Duc’s profound interest in fortification and in the techniques of siege warfare, based on his own experience during the Franco-Prussian war, make this rewarding reading.
