Full Description

Contemporary full red morocco, with gilt stamped seal of Percy family on upper cover. Ink presentation inscription from Duke of Northumberland to George Burdon on half title leaf, dated “Alnwick Castle 1st January 1861”. Occasional spotting on plates (as usual with this title). Frank Broomhead’s copy, with his bookplate.

A substantial and scarce volume of woodcut illustrations of Alnwick Castle, Prudhoe Castle, Warkworth Castle and of other significant mediaeval buildings on the Northumberland estates of the Percy family. The illustrations were principally provided by the well-known wood engraver Orlando Jewitt, and display his confident handling of Gothic architectural detail. The volume was produced in a small number of copies for private distribution by Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland (1792-1865), and all the copies that we have seen carry presentation inscriptions from him. The introductory text provides a list of the plates, brief descriptions of them, and a lengthy list of the armorial bearings of families from whom the 4th Duke of Northumberland was descended.
