Full Description

Large folio. (4)+32pp, (77) plates numbered 1-76 and 3a. Publisher’s printed board portfolio. Some text leaves neatly repaired for tears to outer blank margins, and the first four plates (on different paper to the rest) backed and repaired for minor marginal tears or abrasions.

The original Dutch-language edition of this impressive volume recording the six prize-winning and forty other commended entries in the competition for a Palace of Peace at the Hague sponsored by the millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The first prize was awarded to the architect L/M. Cordonnier but other competing architects included such better-known figures as Berlage, Eliel Saarinen, Otto Wagner, Eduard Cuijpers, W. Kromhout and Wilhelm Kreis, and the volume provides a good opportunity to compare the approach and styles of leading architects from mainland Europe, Britain and the USA. An English-language edition followed in 1907.
