Peter Fuhring’s impressive study of the life and work of the Rococo designer J.-A. Meissonier in two volumes, meticulously researched (based on Fuhring’s doctoral research), beautifully illustrated and awarded the Prix Cenoa for 1999. It includes an illustrated catalogue of Meissonier’s works, his drawings (including his architectural designs), engravings and paintings, as well as chapters on his rôle at court, biographical notes, excerpts from archive documents and a comprehensive bibliography. We understand that the unsold stock of this French-language printing of Fuhring’s book was destroyed in a fire not long after the book’s publication, so copies of it are proportionately desirable.
