A good scholarly edition of the series of engraved views of Venice by Canaletto dedicated to Consul Smith and published in the 1740s under the title Vedute altre prese di luoghi altre ideate. Pallucchini provides an extensive critical and descriptive text, and facsimile reproductions of each of the 34 known engravings. As a publication in the difficult circumstances of the year 1945 it deserves every praise (and Pallucchini’s preface is dated as early as 28 February 1944, showing his devotion to his topic even when the result of the war was still in question).
