4to. 94 + (2 blank)pp, (13) photo plates (of which 2 are coloured and mounted), also photo text ills, with xxviii pp adverts bound in at end. Mid-twentieth century cloth, with original front and back wrappers bound in (coloured front wrapper is from a design by Alexander Rodchenko). A good copy.

Of lasting fame for its cover design by Alexander Rodchenko. The book itself comprises a preface by Cogan, and essays by twelve contributors on aspects of contemporary Russian art and art manufactures. These include O.D.Kamenev, Anatole Lunacharsky (the first People’s Commissar for Education and Culture), the art critic Abram Efross, and the architect Nikolai Dokuchaev. The volume’s photo plates, evidently reflecting what the Russian authorities were intending to have exhibited in the Russian pavilion at the 1925 Paris Exhibition, illustrate porcelain, textiles and objects of folk art, but there are glimpses of modernist images among the illustrations in the text, and the first of the advertisement pages is an impressive poster design for a tractor, printed in yellow, red, and black.
