Full Description

8vo. x + 232pp. Publisher’s cloth, worn at spine and corners. Ink ownership inscription of C.O.Andrews, Selwyn College, Cambridge, April 1899 (Rev.Clement Osborne Andrews, Anglican clergyman), later stamped ownership inscription of Geoffrey M.E.Franklin.
First edition of this volume of lectures by eminent individuals connected with the SPAB, including the painters W.B. Richmond and E.J. Poynter, the architect J.T. Micklethwaite and William Morris himself, the Society’s founder, first Hon. Secretary and main source of inspiration. Morris himself delivered two lectures, discussing respectively “the history of pattern designing” and “the lesser arts of life” (pottery, weaving, etc.), and these include many shrewd observations as well as an excellent pro-SPAB peroration to the first lecture. Micklethwaite’s lecture on English parish churches weighs into the “murdering restorer”.
