Full Description
8vo. 2 works in 1. viii+152+(2)pp ; (4)+2+80pp. Contemporary quarter green calf, marbled boards.
Of these two works, that by Visconti is the first French edition of his essay on the Elgin marbles first published in England at Lord Elgin’s instigation in 1816, and it has the advantage over that edition in that it was printed directly from Visconti’s manuscript and incorporates various authorial alterations and additions. Clarac’s observations offer detailed scholarly comment on various classical sculptures in the Louvre, most notably a Mithraic bas-relief on which he responds at length to views expressed by a rival scholar, Félix Lajard. Both items are scarce.
