Full Description

8vo. 2 vols. in 1. lxxix+(1)+263+(1) ; 331+(1)pp. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards. From the library of Morden College, Blackheath, with small circular ink library stamps to title and to penultimate page, but a good, clean copy, with no other library markings. Charles Kelsall’s copy, with his ink inscription “bought in Bassano 1825” on verso of front free endpaper. A later pencil ownership inscription on recto of same leaf.

Milizia’s notes on famous architects and their works, first published anonymously under a different title in 1768, were extensively revised by him for a more substantial third edition published in 1781, of which the present 1785 edition is a reissue. Milizia’s comments on Italian architects from the sixteenth century down to his own time remain of considerable interest, as does his preface to the first volume. The present copy belonged to the noted intellectual and amateur architect Charles Kelsall (1782-1857), and bears an inscription noting that he had bought the copy in Bassano in 1825. BAL Cat 2130 (1781 edition).
