Full Description

4to. xiv + 69 + (1)pp, 100 photo plates. Publisher’s cloth, bumped at outer corners and a minor incipient split at foot of rear hinge of binding. Some plates a little spotted at outer blank margins, and the front free endpaper browned and abraded at its outer margins. Gavin Stamp’s copy, with his booklabel.

Not the best copy of this title that we have handled, but a substantial book, with a good introduction on mediaeval, Tudor and later timber-framed buildings in the Surrey countryside contributed by William Curtis Green (1875-1960), later on to become a major figure in the architectural profession and a Royal Academician. The photographs for the book were taken by an architect of an older generation, William Galsworthy Davie, who had been a pupil of William Butterfield as far back as the 1860s and was an indefatigable photographer of vernacular buildings in the southern counties of England.
