Full Description

Large folio. (8)pp, colour frontispiece, (24) colour plates, the plates each with facing leaf of text. Publisher’s cloth, bumped at head and foot of spine and split at head of front joint. Ink ownership inscription and bookplate of Eric R.Jarrett, Studio Master at the Architectural Association in the interwar period. Subsequently Brian Housden’s copy.

A large volume reproducing examples of the “beautiful and gorgeous colouring” of surviving Pompeian wall decoration, aimed, as one might suppose, at that section of the educated UK public impressed by the paintings of Alma-Tadema. The volume’s author, the architect Robert Alexander Briggs (1858-1916), had made his reputation as the author of a series of readily selling titles offering designs for small houses and bungalows, earning him the nickname “Bungalow Briggs”, but this book is altogether more ambitious. The present copy has a split towards the top of its front hinge, but as such it is not untypical of copies of this heavy volume, and we offer it as such, priced accordingly.
