Full Description

Set of five engravings on four mounts, respectively measuring 320 x 190, 280 x 180, 320 x 400, 290 x 175, and 300 x 385 mm. Some light browning but otherwise in good condition.
A handsome set of engravings relating to the sixteenth-century financier and economist Sir Thomas Gresham and to the two buildings in the City of London particularly associated with him. These were produced by the engraver George Vertue as illustrations for John Ward’s The Lives of the Professors of Gresham College, 1740, but the present set came to us as separate engravings, and the two largest plates, those of the Royal Exchange and of Gresham College, are without the central or other folds which they would have had if they had been bound in a copy of Ward’s book. Vertue’s engraving of Gresham College is of particular interest, in that the college’s original sixteenth century buildings were demolished in 1768.
