Full Description

4to. Issues 1-22 (complete set as published). Each issue is in its original pictorial wrappers (issues 8-10, 16-18 are additionally in their original card slipcases, some of these slightly defective). The set is generally in good condition, but three issues (11, 15 and 19) have been slightly damp affected at their lower blank margins, with minor traces of past adhesion, particularly on some leaves towards the end of issue 11. Six of the issues (2,3,6, 16, 17, 18) derive from the library of James Stirling, who contributed an article on “Antistructure” to issue 18, while the other issues derive from other sources.
A complete set of the first series of this influential periodical, successively edited by Bruno Alfieri, Pier Carlo Santini and Renzo Zorzi (with Maria Bottero), initially published twice yearly and latterly annually. Contributors to the first issue included Walter Gropius, Conrads, Argan, Giedion, Victor Pasmore, Peter Blake, Ernesto N.Rogers, Arthur Drexler, Maxwell Fry and Victor Bourgeois, and subsequent issues include articles by Le Corbusier, Neutra, Henry-Russell Hitchcock (who became a frequent contributor) and many of the most distinguished architects and architectural writers of the period. Early issues included lengthy articles on such major architects of the twentieth century as Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto, and the magazine also provided excellent coverage of the work of such architects as Utzon, Louis Kahn and Buckminster Fuller. Issue no.8, devoted to American architecture, with well-informed essays on the work of Wright, Philip Johnson, Eames and so on, is of particular merit, as are later issues on Spain (no.15), the USA again (no.17), and Great Britain (no.18). The articles are printed in the national language of each contributor, but there are also summaries at the end of each volume both in Italian and in English. The periodical was to be revived in 1983 but never achieved a similar impact. Sets of the original issues of this periodical are surprisingly uncommon, and the Weinreb firm was never able to list a complete set in any of its extensive catalogues of architectural periodicals. We sold the present set from our Catalogue 63 and have recently reacquired it from the then purchaser, and we believe it to be the only such set currently available on the market.
