Rockingham Castle: its antiquity and history. Drawn from the national archives.
Oxford, I.Shrimpton 1852 (“printed for private distribution”).
Small 8vo. 73 + (1)pp, 6 woodcut plates. Original wrappers, neatly rebacked. Presentation inscription on upper cover from author to “Mons. de Caumont” (Arcisse de Caumont, the eminent French archaeologist and architectural historian), dated as from “Chateau Holdenby” (sic), 5 July 1855.
Only small, but decidedly scarce and a very competent history of this castle up to the time of the English Civil War. The author’s account of the castle in the middle ages is based on original research at the Public Record Office, where he had found accounts for building work on the castle in the reigns of Edward I and Richard II. Recorded in NUC from the New York Public Library copy only.
