Now seventy years old, but still a very useful book on the roof bosses in mediaeval English churches, giving due attention both to their role in roof vaulting and to their sculptural and iconographic qualities. Cave (1871-1950) was the first scholar to make a proper photographic record of the thousands of such bosses that survive.
