Excellent and well-illustrated scholarly monograph on the surviving eighteenth century court theatre at the Swedish royal palace of Drottningholm and on the smaller surviving court theatre at another Swedish royal residence, Gripsholm Castle in Sodermanland. That at Drottningholm was designed by the architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz in the mid 1760s and that at Gripsholm by the architect Erik Palmstedt in the early 1780s, and they are almost unique among theatres of this date in preserving their original stage sets and stage machinery. The present book is an extended version of a monograph previously published at Malmo in 1933 under the auspices of the Swedish Historical Society (and is a superior product to the subsequent 1972 New York reduced format reprint).
