The book’s anodyne title disguises the fact that it contains scholarly essays by the authors on sixteen individual buildings, most of them not properly investigated by previous historians of English architecture. Those by the future Sir Alfred Clapham on the Tower of London, the Tudor royal palaces at Hertford and Havering and Barking Abbey, Essex, are particularly interesting, as are those by Godfrey on the Fortune Theatre, London, and Abbot’s Hospital, Guildford.
