A good copy of this useful volume containing ten separate scholarly essays by the Dominican scholar Giuseppe Allegranza (1713-1785), mostly relating to aspects of the early mediaeval mosaic and sculptural decoration of the great Romanesque church of S. Ambrogio in Milan. They include some particularly interesting remarks on the sculptural representation of animals in churches of the mediaeval period, and they also discuss the reuse of sculptures and sarcophagi of the Roman imperial period in S.Ambrogio and other early Milanese churches. Allegranza was later to become Librarian of Milan’s Biblioteca Braidense (now Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense), established by the Empress Maria Theresa in 1770. Cicognara 3928.
