Folio. xxvi + xvi + viii + xxii + viii + viii + 328pp, 1400 woodcut text ills. This copy has bound as an engraved frontispiece an illustration of the statue of “Early Sorrow” by P.MacDowell, R.A. Publisher’s gilt and blind-stamped cloth, all edges gilt. A woodcut illustration on pp.237-8 has been cut out by an early owner.

The Art Journal catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851 provides the best contemporary illustrated record of the furniture, glassware, porcelain, ornamental metalwork, fabrics and sculpture exhibited in 1851, with an accompanying descriptive text and a series of essays on more general aspects of the exhibition.
