First edition of this influential book in which Mrs Haweis (Mary Eliza Haweis) sets out her ideas about interior decoration, furniture and furnishings generally, ahead of their time for the emphasis she puts on the need for art and beauty in the ordinary middle-class home. The tone of the book is set by an opening chapter entitled “The Art Revolt”, and its impact on her readers would have been significant.
