The last volume to be issued under the present title of this widely read and well-produced monthly periodical founded in 1839 and devoted to the fine and applied arts. It provides much coverage of contemporary exhibitions of paintings and sculptures, as well as engraved reproductions of paintings by such well-known contemporary British artists as Callcott, Eastlake, Etty, Landseer. Maclise and Wilkie. A study of the individual issues shows that although the present volume was certainly the final annual volume of the periodical under the title The Art Union, the title of the periodical was in fact changed to The Art Journal halfway through the year, with effect from the monthly issue for 1 June 1848, and this new title was to be that of all subsequent volumes down to the final closure of the periodical in 1812.
