Full Description

8vo. (4) + 48pp, photo frontispiece, 5 double-page plates (of which 4 are photo), 17 text ills. Publisher’s cloth, all edges gilt. Author’s presentation copy to John Murray (of the publishing firm), with ink presention inscription, also with two ALS from Heales to Murray tipped in at the front and back of the volume, respectively dated 24 March 1890 and 2 April 1890. A good copy.
The author was a keen ecclesiologist who had visited Gottland twice in 1884-5, on the second occasion with a photographer from mainland Sweden. His book provided the first proper English-language description of the principal features of the parish churches of Gottland and Bornholm, chiefly built in the Romanesque style. In one of two accompanying autograph letters to the publisher John Murray, tipped into the present copy, Heales describes his publication as a “private reprint” from the Transactions of the St.Paul’s Ecclesiological Society, and stresses its value as a source for a future edition of Murray’s Handbook for Sweden. He explains in the letter that he had also had printed an “edition de luxe” of his book on the churches of Gottland in quarto format, with many additional photo illustrations, in an edition of 50 copies only, but states elsewhere in the letter that the present version of his book contains a supplementary section on the churches of Bornholm, valuable because these churches were previously “entirely unknown to English archaeologists” and not included in the quarto edition.
