This includes an introduction by Lewis Melville describing his discovery among the Beckford papers belonging to the Dukes of Hamilton of the original French-language texts of these Episodes, written by Beckford in 1786 for inclusion in the finalised published version of Vathek, but never printed in Beckford’s lifetime. Melville’s introduction also prints relevant correspondence of 1785-6 between Beckford and Samuel Henley. The translation of the Episodes had been done by Sir Frank Marzials for an earlier edition published in 1912, but the present edition has the merit that it was “ornamented” by Martin Travers (1886-1948), best known as a designer of stained glass and furnishings for Anglican churches. Millington p.262.
