8vo. xii + 250pp, 67 text ills. Publisher’s cloth (with stamped decorative gilt design on upper cover), a bit soiled and spotted. Ink presentation inscription dated 10 December 1901. Gavin Stamp’s copy, with his bookplate (copy given to him by Alan Crawford, 1976).
Third edition, with a short added preface, of Blomfield’s book first published in 1892. Blomfield wrote the text, and his strong preference is for small formal gardens of the character of those in 16th and 17th century England, making this a significant text in the literature of late nineteenth and early twentieth century British garden design. The attractive illustrations are from drawings by his co-author.
