The fourfold tradition. Notes on the French and English literatures, and some ethnological and historical asides.
London, Barrie and Rockliff 1961.
8vo. 280pp. Publisher’s cloth, in dustwrapper (the wrapper price-clipped and repaired for a tear on upper cover). The Sedgley Park College copy, with oval library stamp on title.
Present here because it includes an essay, “The Palace of Subterranean Fire” (pp 78-89), discussing Beckford, Vathek and the Episodes of Vathek. Heppenstall’s attitude to Beckford is one of distinctly qualified admiration, but this may be due in part to his lack of success in obtaining publication/translation rights to the Episodes, as obliquely referred to in the text. Millington p.286.
