Full Description

8vo. xxiv + (2) + 549 + (1)pp, (8) woodcut plates (all in Dreams part of volume). Publisher’s quarter cloth (imitating morocco), plain cloth sides with stamped lettering on upper cover, bumped at head and foot of spine and a little loose at front hinge (but respectable internally).

A volume in this publisher’s Minerva Library of Famous Books, edited by G.T.Bettany, combining Vathek with Beckford’s travel writings. The present copy is not much to speak about, but the volume has the real merit that Beckford’s narrative of his Italian travels is printed not from his text of 1834 but from the original text of his suppressed Dreams, Waking Thoughts, and Incidents of 1783 (Bettany records in his brief introduction that it was Richard Garnett who suggested this to him). Millington p.260.
