The modern house in England.
London, The Architectural Press 1945.
Folio. 140pp, photo ills throughout. Publisher’s cloth. A heavily erased ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Gavin Stamp’s copy, with his booklabel.
A selection of English modernist houses chosen by the influential architect and architectural writer F.R.S. Yorke (1906-1962), who played an important part in popularising the international modern style in England before the 1939-45 war. This enlarged second edition, originally published in 1944 but here in a 1945 reissue, provides excellent photographic illustrations, plans and descriptions of houses built between 1934 and 1940, including examples by Marcel Breuer and himself, Goldfinger, Gropius and Fry, Mendelsohn and Chermayeff, Lubetkin and Tecton, Denys Lasdun, Wells Coates, and Connell Ward and Lucas.
