8vo. 12 vols bound in 4. Each volume contains viii + 208pp except for vol.12, which has xii + 203 + (1)pp (vol.1 also has errata slip), with many woodcut ills. Uniformly bound in contemporary quarter calf, cloth sides.
The last significant publication by the Irish-born writer and lecturer Dionysius Lardner (1793-1859), issued in 156 parts, forming 12 volumes, between 1854 and 1856. Each volume deals with a variety of topics likely to interest mid-nineteenth century readers with an interest in popular science, but Lardner’s favourite subjects include astronomy, geology (and vulcanology), railways, optical instruments, clocks and watches, and the steam engine.
