Full Description

Small 8vo. xi + (1) + 288pp, (3) (ex 4) folding engraved plates (lacking view of Bothwell Castle), folding engraved map. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards. Old ink ownership inscription on title leaf. A little browned and spotted. No subsequent ownership inscription, but Sir Howard Colvin’s copy.

An early guide book to Glasgow, providing descriptions of the city’s public buildings and principal churches, as well as much useful information on the city’s history, governance and commerce. The present copy lacks one plate, as indicated in the collation that we give, but it does contain the interesting (although in this copy rather browned) double-page engraved view of the interior of Messrs. Cleland, Black, Patterson & Co’s furniture showroom in Trongate, one of the earliest such views to appear in a printed book, and is certainly worth having.
