(Cockerell, C.R.) Cockerell, Samuel Pepys (ed)
Travels in southern Europe and the Levant, 1810-1817. The journal of C.R. Cockerell, R.A.
London, Longman 1903.
Full Description
8vo. xii+286pp, portrait frontispiece. Publisher’s cloth. A good copy.
Cockerell’s journal of his travels in Greece and the Levant, which forms the basis for this volume of 1903 edited by his son, documents his role in excavating and securing the marble friezes from the temples at Aegina and Bassae, in concert with his English fellow traveller John Foster and the German architect Haller von Hallerstein. It also supplies a good deal of information about sites, monuments and the state of the Peloponnese and the southern coast of Turkey in the second decade of the nineteenth century. A very difficult book to find in the book trade today (we last handled a copy in 2002, and that was a rebound copy in a recent binding).
