An interesting volume in German translation which is scarce today and which testifies to the impact of Henry Gally Knight’s writings on Norman architecture in England, France and Sicily on the educated public on the European continent. An added merit is that the volume’s introduction, supplied by the distinguished German scholar Carl Richard Lepsius, takes the form of a lengthy separate essay by him on the architecture of major German cathedrals and churches in the tenth and eleventh centuries, with eight new accompanying lithograph plates. This must have added materially to the value of the book for its original German-speaking readership, and remains of significance today. Additionally, Lepsius both provides close copies of the six plates which had illustrated the original edition of Gally Knight’s An Architectural Tour in Normandy, and adds to the translated text of Gally Knight’s book on The Normans in Sicily, which had been unillustrated in its original edition, a further nine plates which are reduced copies of a selection of those in Gally Knight’s large folio volume, Saracenic and Norman Remains, 1840.
