8vo. 510pp, including 24 collotype plates, also 218 text ills. Publisher’s printed boards, cloth spine (small dents at outer edges of binding). Ink ownership inscription of Charles Holden, 29 January 1918. Subsequently Brian Housden’s copy.
The standard early twentieth century textbook on lettering, first published in 1906, written by the famous calligrapher and lettering designer Edward Johnston (1872-1944), and one of the most successful titles in this London’s publisher’s series of handbooks on the “Artistic Crafts”. The present copy has the interest that it belonged to the architect Charles Holden (1875-1960), best remembered as a designer of stations for the London Underground and as the architect of Senate House, London University.
